Short answerHow long after eating can you swim? For safety, there's no evidence you need to wait. For comfort, a big meal is easier 2 to 3 hours before a swim, and a snack 30 to 60 minutes before.

What the evidence says about swimming after eating

The American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council reviewed the research on eating before swimming. It summarised swim studies from the 1960s, including Asprey, Alley and Tuttle (1968) and Singer and Neeves (1968). They found no difference in performance, very few cases of nausea and no cramps. The review found no recorded drownings linked to eating before swimming.

The International Life Saving Federation's position statement on eating before swimming covers the same question.

Why some people feel rough swimming after eating

A full stomach, fatty food and fizzy drinks can all make a swim uncomfortable. That's a comfort issue, not a safety one, and it's why the timings below are about feeling good in the water.
